Our decision to be the first restaurant in the UK to offer “Organic Served Here” was down to our commitment to ensure all the food we create at Cafe is well-sourced and prepared. In 2017 we won the Soil Association’s Best Of Organic Market (BOOM Awards) Restaurant of the Year which made me so proud after all the hard work we put in to finding small-scale artisans who grow and breed organically for us.
I use the natural, no dig method in my garden with astonishing results. I’m still picking handfuls of climbing French beans most evenings and the fruit yield is growing every year. With Organic September behind us, now is the time to batten down the hatches and look to the colder months with all their root veg and slow cooking. It’s a wonderful time of year when the sun only rises so high. Some folk may mock the organic way of life but I want to know what’s in my food and who grew it or bred it.
|All this talk is making me hungry so I’ll tell you what’s on this week’s ‘at home’ menu. It begins with our sourdough and good butter, then moves on to Katy Rodger’s whipped crowdie with pickled organic beetroot and candied nuts. This is one of our most popular starters at Cafe.|
The main course is slow-braised Scotch beef with roots and horseradish – it’s just the right time of year for it. The cheese course is, as always, supplied by I.J. Mellis and served with our oatcakes and chutney.
Then for pudding it’s a very sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce – absolutely delicious for a cold autumn day. Artisan Roast will provide the coffee and we will bake a batch of shortbread to go with it.
