Redcastle Spirits have been making high strength alcohol based hand sanitiser since last Friday and given away 25 litres for free to local businesses and those in need within the community. They were inundated and ran out within 3 hours.
Since Monday, and following consultation with HMRC, they now had to charge the full rate of UK excise duty (which is £28.74/L of pure alcohol) and are supplying a number of local care homes, police stations, NHS workers and local authority offices.
Their distiller, Lewis Scothern of Distillutions Ltd in Arbroath, has been working flat out making the hand sanitiser along with 3 members of staff working day and night to fulfil the orders. Once they have covered their basic costs they will be making a further donation to local charities.
They have temporarily ceased production of their gin, gin liqueurs and rum to focus on this for the time being. ‘ It simply feels like the right thing to do…’
…However if gin is your preferred purchase they have an online shop and I am sure there is still stock available in retail outlets too.
