UK’s first ever three-year-old cask strength rum, distilled on an uninhabited island in Orkney, to be released next month.

Hidden Depths Volume 1 from J. Gow Rum is the distillery’s first limited-edition cask rum, with only 250 bottles available for sale from October 9th.

The distillery is based on Lamb Holm, which is connected to the Orkney mainland by the Churchill Barriers. Measuring in at just 0.15 square miles, it’s possibly the smallest rum-producing island the world.

J. Gow Rum – named after Orkney’s infamous pirate, John Gow – was launched in 2017, with products on offer including its Spiced Rum and Fading Light, a chestnut cask-aged rum. Now Hidden Depths Volume 1 will be added to the range, having been laid down in oak casks during the distillery’s first year of operation.

It has been fermented, distilled and aged on Lamb Holm and, at a strength of 53.2%, the rum is rich with flavours of caramel, toffee and oak, backed by subtle liquorice. It comes with chocolate orange notes on the palate and a slightly salted finish, befitting its coastal home.

The rum will be bottled at the end of September. Head Distiller, Collin Van Schayk, said: “We’re delighted to have finally reached this stage. Aged rums – particularly 8 and 12-year olds – have always been our main goal.”

“Knowing this is the first of its kind in the UK makes this release even more exciting and we can’t wait to hear what people think.”
