East Neuk Salt Co produces the first commercial salt in Fife for centuries launched in 2021. Try it in local restaurants such as The Dory Bistro, Pittenweem and available to buy nearby at Ardross Farm Shop. (Claire from Ardross pictured with a delivery). A delicious artisan salt from the Firth of Forth.
St. Monans has a rich history of salt harvesting that peaked in the 17th & 18th centuries. The historical evidence of this once-thriving industry clearly remains with the iconic windmill and the saltpans ruins by the shore. It surely has a fascinating tale to tell and one that East Neuk Sea Salt brings to you.
It was on a family walk along the Salt pans one day that the idea came to Darren Peattie, to bring back salt harvesting to the East Neuk. Since that day he and his wife Mhairi (pictured at an Ardross event) have worked extremely hard, with the support of many people in the community, to realise this idea. ‘The heritage we once had in salt harvesting is as important as the future we can create by bringing salt harvesting back to the shores of the East Neuk’…and they have produced delicious results.
They have a modern salt production unit in St Monans with plans for a heritage education centre and visitor attraction in due course.
