A Tattie by any other name…!

Pick your perfect spud by its quirky name and when you should order your potatoes for. Our free delayed delivery means you are in charge!

There are so many ways to pick a potato, by cooking type, maturity, or blight resistance.

But why not go for a less scientific method this time?  Pick one that makes you smile!

We’ve got some cracking potato names,  from Colleen to OrlaJacky to Nicola, and it got us thinking… are you named after a spud? Or maybe you’ve got a friend who is!

Did you know many potatoes were named after celebrities and royalty of their day?  Varieties like Red Duke of York, King Edward, and Charlotte were named to honour famous figures, a reminder that potatoes once had their own touch of glamour!

Many potatoes take their names from places – a nod to where they were bred or first grown. Arran Victory hails from the Isle of Arran and was released to mark the end of the First World War. Maris Peer comes from Maris Lane in Cambridge, home to the Plant Breeding Institute where it was developed. Pentland Javelin originates from the Pentland Hills region in Scotland, known for its robust, early cropping. These names tell the story of where our favourite spuds began, proof that every potato has its own roots in history and geography.

Why not grow “your” namesake potato this season?  Or perhaps a variety that reminds you of a holiday.

Grow your own piece of history and find a potato that shares your name or personality!

‍🥔Plan Your Potato Delivery 🥔

‍You need to work out the last frost date for your area and work backwards from there.  We generally say later is fine!  A lot of folk are caught out with late frosts in April and May – the young plant is susceptible to frost.   However it really depends on where you live and personal preference – if you can keep the plants frost free by bringing them indoors or wrapping with fleece/old sheet etc.  We have customers in Cornwall who are harvesting just as our customers in Northern Scotland are planting!

Mid-Feb till Mid-March is around average to start chitting and gives you 4-6 weeks to chit and then plant in late March /April if the forecast is looking good!  However, delaying by a week or two would do no harm.

OVER 98% success rate last year! Many customers enjoy this free delayed delivery service, especially for our rarer varieties. Tubers will arrive with you in perfect condition as they have been in cold storage until they are sent to you.
