Which One Is For You? Taster or On The Rocks?
The Taster is 90 minutes on the upper shore. You’ll learn to identify common edible seaweeds and shore plants, hear about their place in Scottish food and culture, and sample a few pre-prepared dishes. It’s a proper introduction and an easy way in.
On the Rocks is four hours in the intertidal. You forage the seaweed yourself, then we cook it over an open fire and eat a five-course tasting menu made from what you’ve gathered that morning. Going deeper into the intertidal means seeing more species, and you leave having done a bit more hands-on preparation.
Honestly, it often comes down to timing. Four hours on the beach is a luxury not everyone can spare. (But from the feedback I’ve had, it’s also a luxury well worth it) Both are brilliant ways of getting acquainted with the shore and getting a good grounding. It depends on your time, your budget and how deep you want to go.
For both, you’ll need to arrange your own travel to the meeting point and bring weather-appropriate clothing and footwear suitable for walking on the coastline.
