So apparently we’re talking about Christmas…
October already! We’re not entirely sure where September went, but there’s no mistaking autumn now.
The garden is changing, the days are getting noticeably shorter and the kitchen has moved firmly towards the sort of food we all want when it’s getting colder outside.
There’s still plenty being picked and cooked, though – and some of the late produce is definitely worth waiting for.
WHAT’S COOKING?
One of the nice things about autumn is being allowed to cook proper puddings again!
Not that we necessarily stopped over the summer, but sticky toffee pudding somehow makes considerably more sense when it’s dark outside before supper.
We’re also making the most of beetroot, autumn fruit and everything else that’s still coming in. It’s a lovely time of year to cook – the ingredients change, appetites change and menus naturally follow.
FROM THE GARDEN
The elderberries have been particularly good this year.
They’re not terribly exciting eaten straight from the tree, but once cooked they’re brilliant with other autumn fruits and useful for all sorts of things in the kitchen.
And then there are the flowers. Jo is still producing some fairly ridiculous dahlias – including one recently that looked almost big enough to require its own vase.
There’s always something going on out there, even as the summer garden starts winding down.
IS IT TOO EARLY TO MENTION CHRISTMAS?
Apparently not!
Christmas enquiries have already started coming in, which means we’re beginning to think about winter menus and rather a lot of festive food.
As ever, we don’t work from one set menu. What we cook depends on the occasion and the people we’re cooking for – although there are some things at Christmas that would probably cause a revolt if we left them out!
If you’re planning a Christmas lunch, dinner or get-together and would like us to take care of the food, it’s worth getting in touch.

AND ALREADY…NEXT SUMMER
It seems slightly ridiculous to be thinking about next summer when we’ve only just put the summer clothes away, but the diary is already getting busy.
We’ve had lots of lovely weddings to cook for this year, all very different, which is exactly how we like them. We don’t have a standard wedding menu – we start with what the couple actually wants to eat and work from there.
So if you’re getting married next year and food is high on the list of priorities, now is a very good time to start the conversation.
