Top Tips…
We’ve been having a debate and I’d like some help. Has the day of the automatic gratuity added to a bills had it’s day or is it a vitally important part of teams’ remuneration?
A recent Consumer Outlook research by RSM UK survey found 47% of consumers would rather tip at their own discretion than have an optional amount already added to their bill.
If you buy a bun in a bakery you get asked if you’d like to add a tip. If you pop into get a new frying pan the same question isn’t asked. The hairdresser gets a tip but the dental hygienist doesn’t? Some restaurants are now adding up to 20% as an additional charge. Perhaps they are following an American model where tips are expected to supplement nominal pay rates? Despite changes to the living wage here in the UK, the hospitality labour market still expects (and their teams would say deserves) tips. I agree the emotional energy/labour used to deliver an experience is higher in a table service environment than in most retail. I know our team appreciates their tips but what do we need to do to ensure they are paid? Deliver great service and great food? We all want value for money. Do tips add value?
We’re having a debate and we’d appreciate your thoughts. Three little questions that I’d really appreciate your top tips on.
