Profile
The Crinan Hotel is a really special place. Located at the northward end of the Crinan Canal and famous for being ‘magnificently eccentric’ with exceptional food. Home to the Ryan family, all 20 bedrooms have breath-taking views.
Proprietors Frances & Nick Ryan have been welcoming guests to this picturesque backwater for over 45 years. Sadly Nick died in April 2018 but Frances and the rest of the team at the Crinan Hotel continue to build on Nick’s legacy of excellent hospitality and attention to detail.
Frances is also a gifted artist and many of her creations adorn the walls; regularly exhibited far and wide as Frances Macdonald, exhibiting at the Portland Gallery in London and the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh.
The Crinan Hotel was awarded the European Luxury Sea View Hotel of the Year Award by the Luxury Travel Guide.
If only walls could talk, there have been some pretty famous visitors here over the years. There has been an Inn at Crinan since the Canal was built close on 200 years ago and the pub at the Hotel has been the meeting place for generations of local families and fishermen and visiting yachts. The Hotel has a choice of several places to eat.
They specialise in seafood but also have a mouth-watering selection of local venison, steaks, hill lamb and vegetarian dishes. The Westward Restaurant included in the Michelin Guide for many years, serves first class imaginative fare. The Crinan Seafood Bar is deliciously informal. Voted No 1 Gastro Pub in Scotland by the Independent. Their catch of the day is landed by their own fishing boat 50 metres from the kitchen – beat that for food miles!
Dinner is served in either the Seafood Bar or The Westward Restaurant, also from an a la carte menu with additional specials. The Westward Restaurant offers fine views and is just the place for a relaxing evening meal. Enjoy the sunset with a five-course menu and coffee. Looking west you can see the sun set over the Corryvreckan, Jura and Scarba.
Lunch is served in the Seafood Bar or under the marvellous tented outdoor space, overlooking the canal.
Lock 16 has won many awards including best Seafood Restaurant in the UK, and is open during the summer for parties of 6 or more for dinner and for private parties at anytime between May and September.
