Science Festival programme and tickets online!
The International Orkney Science Festival (3-9 September) programme and tickets are now online! The programme has so many highlights, including visits on film or in person to parts of Orkney you may not have visited before – to Swona for instance, out on the edge of the Pentland Firth’s tides. We will show it from the air as well as the shore, in a new film that includes the search for what may be one of the earliest Christian sites in Orkney. And we have the story of Swona’s cattle, which have reverted to ancient patterns of herd behaviour, going far back to days before human domestication.
Wendy Barrie (Founder of Scottish Food Guide) and partner, Bosse Dahlgren (Regenerative Farmer) will be presenting: “What is a Meadow and why is it important?” Bosse and Wendy’s combined expertise embraces Slow Food principles and the art of producing food of exceptional quality. “The meadow is the mother of the farming system.” They will revisit this old saying with natural unfertilised meadows; showing how to produce everything you need for a healthy life and sustainable business through increasing biodiversity using the meadow system. By feeding animals meadow hay you bring in micro-minerals and fertiliser to your land, enabling the creation of amazing produce, simultaneously boosting biodiversity, so much of which is lost today.
