Profile
Welcome to new member Denhead Farms. At this fabulous time of the year, it is renowned for its fresh asparagus so look out for their branding in a farm shop near you. Chefs are going wild for it and recently Denhead hosted an open day for us cooks and chefs to see the whole journey of this extraordinary vegetable. Asparagus takes several years to produce a good crop, then is deftly hand-harvested with great delicacy and speed; sorted and rinsed on-farm and delivered to shops and chefs within 24 hours. Impressive as well as delicious.
Six generations of farming here, there are currently three generations of the family working in the farm business, all passionate about farming and looking at ways to move with the market: growing traditionally and also always seeking innovative crops. Family farms have flexibility – they listen to what consumers are after.
Easy to find on the road out past Coupar Angus, there is ample parking, an honesty farm shop and dog exercise paddock adjacent. Their farm shop sells their own vegetables including cauliflower, broccoli, potatoes and carrots in addition to asparagus. Later in the summer there will be blueberries. There is also a good stock from other local producers to widen their range and every month there is a bustling Monthly Market with producer stalls from around and about. It is becoming increasingly popular with stallholders and visitors – especially as they now have a spacious indoors alternative for when the weather is unkind. There is a coffee machine and comfy seating to pause a moment while you shop.
They also grow flax for the textile market, with all parts of the flax used. Minimal wastage, recycling materials and using every part of crops is intrinsic to their modus operandi.
Look out soon for their Asparagus Festival Day in May keep an eye on Facebook for the date, dependent on peak asparagus season!
