As they rightly say ‘If the landscape doesn’t take your breath away, the food will.’ Renowned for their 3AA Rosettes, 5 Gold Star with rooms, members of the prestigious Scotch Beef Club and with David’s fine wine cellar, this luxury boutique hotel is quite unique. Open daily (always best to check though) for Morning Coffee & Scones/Shortbread and Seasonal Produce Bar Lunches, but need reservations for Restaurant Lunches (2,3,or 4 courses), Full Afternoon Teas and their 5-course set dinner menu. They now also have fabulous al fresco dining available too.
The day we dined our lunch comprised of smooth velvety wild mushroom soup, grilled fillet of John Dory cooked to perfection, succulent slow roasted breast of chicken with chicken and truffle boudin, hot marmalade soufflé to die for, and an enticing platter of cheeses. Knockinaam’s reputation for fine food is justly deserved.
This idyllic spot could be straight from an Agatha Christie novel! Indeed it has an interesting past and has played its part in the history of Scotland as the location for a meeting between Churchill and General Eisenhower in World War II. It also featured in John Buchan’s 39 Steps – a favourite of mine. Set on its own bay and only a short distance from the pretty village of Portpatrick, this beautiful mansion is stunning and the food award-winning.
