Profile
This bright and cheery addition to Fife’s food scene is in a handy location between Hillend and Crossgates in West Fife. With ample parking, a play area for children, and outdoor seating for those with canine friends, there is lots happening to see, do and taste. Hens are clucking about, alpacas grazing contentedly, meet Pamela the bunny, along with peacocks, ducks and guinea fowl. The café rests on a rise in the landscape offering beautiful rural views south over Fife and beyond.
There is also his adjacent Farm Shop with local cheese, an impressive array of loaves, produce from Scottish artisan producers, home bakes and market fresh vegetables – particularly handy for locals as there is a dearth of doorstep greens if, like us, you are avoiding supermarkets!
Ray bakes creative sponges (like the fabulous Polish-inspired pistachio gateau pictured) and home-baked treats to accompany the whole gambit of teas and coffees; varied salads and gourmet toasties, steaming soups and his own special take on burgers. He is sourcing his ingredients from as many local suppliers as possible and is passionate about the food he cooks. Whilst there is a menu, his daily blackboard offers a cornucopia of other options, often accompanied with fresh salad leaves from his adjacent greenhouse. He focusses on being as zero food miles as possible, serving local game from hunters through the onsite butcher that is also located in this rural community.
His popular breakfast menu oozes temptations, from classic farmhouse to delicious pancakes with maple syrup, huevos rancheros and scrumptious French sourdough toast with bacon. Lunches include burgers, bagels, poke bowls and charcuterie. Along with the local game, Ray has made many local contacts for seasonal ingredients. My chef salad was brimming with crunch and flavours, colours and juiciness – a healthy vibrant meal.
