Profile
Ronnie and his family farm Uradale organically with SOPA (Scottish Organic Producers Association) Membership. They are dedicated to the heritage breeds indigenous to the Shetland Isles : Native Shetland Lamb, beef from the Shetland Cow (‘Kye’) and organic Native Shetland Wool. RBST Award Winner 2022 Farm of the Year.
Their organic wool and yarns are simply stunning and look out for the annual Shetland Wool Week. Uradale is a very special place where organic heritage breed farming, food production & natural fibres are all intrinsic to their sustainable business: from the natural grazing of heaths & moors producing fine flavours, to the organic yarns from which Viveka creates outstanding patterns to inspire you. In addition to their online wool shop, they are stockists of our book “Meadows: The Swedish Farmer & The Scottish Cook.”
They have a really beautiful Yarn Shop at the farm – not open daily so contact them for further details. As the family run farm tours and are very active with booked groups of wool specialists, knitters and spinners, the on-farm yarn shop is very popular with these groups. Their meats are not on sale in the yarn shop but are available locally at Scoop, a shop in Lerwick, and they also do mail order that I use frequently.
Exceptional care is taken to create natural dyed yarns of many shades and depths, unbleached and the only organic wool of its kind. One of Viveka’s many skills is that of creating imaginative designs using their yarns so knitting patterns are available and exemplars on display – and often worn by Viveka and Ronnie.
