We are delighted the Championship currently receives sponsorship from The Edinburgh Bakers Trust. a registered charity (SC047164) whose purpose is the advancement of baking education, arts, heritage, culture and science. Their core activity is to award small grants to bakers and other related organisations.
Scotland The Bread & Scottish Food Guide are also main sponsors. The Scottish Bread Championship was co-founded by Andrew Whitley (Scotland The Bread) & Wendy Barrie (Scottish Food Guide) in 2017. Our grateful thanks to our friends, families and colleagues who give their time and enthusiasm to help us on the days. They do this on a purely voluntary basis and we really appreciate it.
The Scottish Festival of Real Bread is back, and it’s the perfect way to kick off Real Bread Week 2025 (15 to 23 February)! This celebration of the best in bread-making offers the chance to immerse yourself in the world of Real Bread, from simply eating it to debating the future of grain systems. Once again, a highlight of the Festival will be the awards ceremony of the annual Scottish Bread Championship, as well as a communal bread stall selling some of the finest loaves Scotland has to offer.
The programme (download a copy here) is currently being finalised, but events so far confirmed include:
- Live demonstrations: learn from the experts as they demonstrate techniques ranging from dough shaping to roti making
- Children’s workshops: let your little ones get hands-on in our sourdough flatbread workshops, designed for young bakers.
- Sourdough troubleshooting sessions: struggling with your starter? Bring your questions to our experts for on-the-spot advice
- Film screenings, including Celebrating Scottish Grains and a filmed version of Arise! Songs & Stories for the Bread Revolution
- The Big Thrash: hands-on threshing for children!
- Participatory discussions on shaping the future of vital grain networks.
The Championship might be a competition but it’s also a celebration: we’d like to encourage you to work towards submitting your best loaf, not necessarily trying to beat everyone else’s, and are here to support everyone towards the ultimate result – baking the loaf you want.
